November 2023 Adoptions

November marked our 430th adoption of the year — making this the best year for adoptions since we launched America’s first cat cafe! Can we beat our 2015 record?

This year, Cat Town’s supporters…

  • Got treatment for Taro, who developed FIP at age 9, giving him lifesaving treatment for his condition and supporting his adopters throughout the process.

  • Helped cats like Nutella and Francis overcome fear through our Feral or Fearful program, ensuring that scared cats could feel safe and spend their lives being cherished in a home.

  • Made space at the shelter by supporting kittens like Bev and Lobel, so that more at-risk cats could have their best chance at life outside of a cage.

  • Socialized scared Forgotten Kittens like Corduroy and Denim, helping them find courage and take a chance on love.

  • Gave comfort to senior cats like Vincent Valentine, Koosh, and Meryl, finding them loving homes for their golden years.

In November alone, we found matches for 36 cats. We could do this work thanks to support from our community. Your donations help us combat the rising cost of our efforts, so we can keep up with the rising need for our care. Thank you for supporting our mission to help sick, injured, scared, stressed, and senior cats have their best possible chance at getting adopted. You saved these cats, and as we look back on the fantastic year of adoptions we’ve had, we’re proud and grateful to have you in our corner.

When Frost, Emerson, Neruda, and Angelou were big enough to adopt, we got them straight from their Oakland Animal Services foster so the litter could side-step a ringworm outbreak at the shelter. At our Pet Food Express adoption location, they all stole hearts — and all got adopted within two weeks!

After his owner passed away, neighbors found Mykonos hiding under the porch. At the shelter, he was depressed. We got him into foster care, where he started to come out of his shell — but when this big boy stopped eating, he needed to be fed through an esophageal tube four times a day to jumpstart his appetite again. After a few weeks, he was back to eating on his own, and seemed to especially enjoy his meals with the company of people. His adopters met him at our Adoption Center, and spent three hours sitting with him. It was love at first sight, and they tell us that his introduction to their cat-friendly dog and bunny are going swimmingly: “He's such an amazing cat, so affectionate, and just really wants to be a part of the family!”

Sixteen-year-old Ciabatta arrived at the Oakland shelter as a dirty stray. She would barely look at people, and although she seemed quite sad, she would still allow pets. We got her into foster care, and started treating her kidney disease. Soon, this 5-pound cat transformed into a little shadow — never far, always ready to purr, and sweet as can be. She was adopted by a family who was looking for an older cat to shower with love for the rest of their days. They told us, “We’ve never seen a cat who loved cat TV more than this little sweetie. She loves to turn into a furry loaf about 4-5 feet from the screen to watch the birds and squirrels gather food. Of course, when her favorite show comes on (mice), she goes from 16 years old to about 6!”

An Oakland Animal Care Officer discovered Marinara locked in a carrier inside a dumpster, and saved her life. We don’t know much about her life before then, but we knew she was missing fur and positive for FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus), so would need extra time to heal. We got her into our foster program, and although initially shy, this little cat soon proved to be quite sweet. With our guidance, Marinara’s fosters helped resolve her itchy skin, and after two months, her fur had grown back in. Helping a cat recover from so much can be an emotional experience, so it’s no wonder Marinara’s fosters decided to adopt her! They let us know, “We love her so much, and she’s a wonderful addition to our lives. Looking back made us realize how much she’s transformed since being here!”

When Galapagos came to us as a scared Forgotten Kitten, he was a little spitfire who tried desperately to figure out how doorknobs work — but he was also the first in his litter to turn as sweet as can be. One of our staff fell in love with him and realized they simply couldn’t say goodbye, so they made it official and brought him home. He slept in bed with them on his first night, and is already making friends with their other kitten, Emma Bug!

Thank you for helping us get sick cats medical care, provide encouragement to scared kittens learning to trust for the first time, and be a safe space for every shelter cat who needs us. Your support makes our work possible, so we want to thank you for getting these cats home for the holidays!
