SOL’S JOURNEY (SO FAR)
Sol has come a long way. After recovering from severe stomatitis, he's finally feeling well enough to discover what it means to simply enjoy being a cat. These days, this 5-year-old orange boy is rediscovering the joys of playtime, chin scratches, and romping around with his feline foster brother. But his story had a rough start and difficult chapters throughout.
A former stray, Sol arrived at the shelter sick and “very at risk” of euthanasia. He was diagnosed with chronic stomatitis, an inflammatory condition affecting the mouth. "Stomatitis is one of the most painful conditions we treat, and can be difficult to cure,” explains Aggie Animal Dental Center’s Dr. Lommer. “Sol had been dealing with swollen, ulcerated gums and cheeks for probably most of his life.”
Sol was transferred to Cat Town to receive medical care. For eight months, we tried the standard treatments available to help him feel better. He underwent full dental extractions, received Solensia for pain and inflammation, and tried cold laser therapy, along with other recommended approaches. Despite all that care, his painful symptoms persisted. Then our friends at Aggie decided to try Gingipro, a long shot experimental treatment that only recently became available in the U.S., to address his condition.
The change wasn’t immediate, but it was remarkable: after about three months of treatment, his symptoms had completely resolved. After months of searching for something that would work, Gingipro was the treatment that finally gave him lasting relief.
He was Aggie Animal Dental Center’s first patient to receive this brand-new compounded medication, which was a phenomenal success — a 12-week course fully resolved his stomatitis, and he is now cured! “It's fantastic that Cat Town was dedicated to providing Sol the specialized care he needed,” said Dr. Lommer. “We're grateful that we could help Sol, and hope he lives a long, pain-free life!"
Sol is thriving in his Cat Town foster home while he waits for his next chapter to begin. He’s looking for an indoor-only home with at least one playful cat companion to befriend. He's an enthusiastic copycat, trying out other cats' favorite sleeping spots, learning their routines, and even joining in their dramatic mealtime announcements.
Although he can be cautious with new people and startle at loud noises, Sol’s friendly nature usually wins out. This sweet boy enjoys sleeping between the pillows in his foster’s bed to stay close, and charms everyone he meets with his adorable tongue that often peeks out from the side of his toothless mouth. Sol is also FIV-positive and, while fully recovered from his stomatitis, adopters should be prepared for ongoing veterinary check-ups as his recovery continues.
